Job Title: Grid Connection Application Process Manager Location: GermanyContract: Freelance / Contract Sector: Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
The OpportunityWe are seeking an experienced Grid Connection Application Process Manager to support the development of large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Germany.
This is a process-driven role for a professional with a strong understanding of the German grid connection landscape and a proven track record of successfully managing grid connection applications through the relevant stages of the process.
Working closely with external electrical engineering consultancies, German grid operators and the company's headquarters in Spain, you will take ownership of coordinating grid connection applications, ensuring that the right stakeholders are aligned, technical deliverables are progressing and applications move forward efficiently.
**This is not a hands-on electrical engineering position.** Instead, the focus is on managing the overall application process, coordinating technical inputs and navigating the requirements of German grid operators to help bring utility-scale BESS projects forward.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage grid connection applications: Coordinate and oversee grid connection application processes for large-scale BESS projects across Germany, from initial submission through subsequent stages and key milestones.- Coordinate external engineering partners: Act as the central point of contact for external electrical engineering consultancies, ensuring technical documentation, studies and application materials are delivered accurately and on schedule.- Liaise with grid operators: Manage communication and follow-up with relevant distribution and transmission system operators (DSOs and TSOs), tracking application progress, responding to requests and resolving process-related issues.- Coordinate internal stakeholders: Work closely with the development and technical teams at the company's Spanish headquarters, providing clear updates on application status, outstanding requirements, risks and next steps.- Monitor application progress: Maintain oversight of multiple applications and projects, tracking deadlines, submission requirements, grid operator feedback and critical milestones.- Navigate German grid requirements: Ensure applications progress in line with applicable grid operator procedures, technical requirements and relevant German regulatory frameworks.- Resolve bottlenecks: Identify delays, missing information and stakeholder dependencies, proactively coordinating solutions to keep applications moving.- Report on progress: Provide structured updates to internal stakeholders on application status, potential risks and actions required to maintain project timelines.
Candidate Requirements- Proven experience managing or coordinating grid connection application processes in Germany, ideally for utility-scale renewable energy projects.- A demonstrable track record of progressing grid connection applications successfully through the relevant stages of the process.- Familiarity with the German grid connection landscape, including interactions with DSOs and/or TSOs and their application procedures.- Experience working with external electrical engineering consultancies and coordinating technical deliverables without necessarily producing the engineering work yourself.- Understanding of the technical documentation and studies typically required for grid connection applications.- Strong project coordination and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to manage multiple applications and competing deadlines.- Excellent communication skills and the confidence to engage with technical consultants, grid operators and international internal teams.- Professional fluency in German, given the day-to-day interaction with German grid operators, alongside sufficient English to coordinate with the Spanish headquarters.
Desirable Experience- Experience with utility-scale BESS projects in Germany.- Familiarity with medium-voltage and high-voltage grid connections and the requirements associated with large-scale energy storage developments.- Exposure to German grid connection regulations and standards, including relevant VDE application rules such as VDE-AR-N 4110 and VDE-AR-N 4120.- Experience working for a renewable energy developer, independent power producer (IPP), BESS developer or specialist grid consultancy.
