Piper Maddox are exclusively working with a renowned high voltage specialist electrical engineering company based in the UK. They work across a range of industries focusing on the renewable energy space whilst specialising in electrical power infrastructure and grid connections. This company are now looking to expand their team through the hire of an Electrical Design Engineer based in Bristol.

 

As an Electrical Design Engineer, you’ll actively be involved in their Engineering team working towards their portfolio of high voltage projects. You will be responsible for the design of high voltage electrical infrastructure and follow projects from the concept to the construction phases.

 

Role: Electrical Design Engineer

Location: Bristol, UK (Hybrid)

Salary: £55,000-£60,000 plus bonus

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design of HV substations and electrical infrastructure (11 kV to 132 kV)– including substation building layouts, primary substation equipment layouts, busbar designs, primary equipment specifications
  • Protection & Control design– preparation of protection SLD’s, protection scheme specifications, protection & control schematics, protection coordination reports, relay configuration files.
  • HV Cable Design– design and verification of cable designs, cable ampacity rating calculations & reports using standard manufacturers data and finite analysis software packages (Cymcap).
  • Engage directly with clients, consultants, and DNO/TNO representatives to deliver projects on time and to specification

 

Skills:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Previous experience in electrical design, possibly within electrical contracting or utilities sectors
  • Strong technical knowledge of power engineering
  • Ability to manage multiple design projects and meet conflicting deadlines

Key ResponsibilitiesDesign & Technical Leadership Lead electrical design for solar and BESS projects, including site plans, one-line diagrams, stringing plans, and equipment layouts.Review and approve designs for technical accuracy and compliance with NEC, IEEE, UL, and local AHJ requirements.Perform PV system calculations, cable sizing, grounding, and overcurrent protection per NEC and best practices.Provide conceptual layouts and feasibility reviews to support development and operations teams. Plan Set Coordination Manage Issued for Permit (IFP) and Issued for Construction (IFC) plan sets, ensuring alignment with project timelines and regulatory requirements.Coordinate with Engineers of Record (EORs), utilities, and EPC partners for technical submittals and interconnection compliance.Review electrical studies (load flow, short-circuit, coordination) and recommend design improvements. Battery Storage & Equipment Integration Lead engineering for DC- and AC-coupled BESS systems, including inverter and battery configurations and protection coordination.Support major equipment selection (switchgear, transformers, relays, communication systems) and collaborate with vendors and EPC partners. Process Improvement Develop internal engineering standards, templates, and quality control processes.Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency and scalability. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Illinois required.5+ years of electrical engineering experience in renewable energy (solar + BESS).Proven ability to lead electrical design for solar projects from concept through construction.Strong knowledge of NEC, IEEE, NFPA, IEC standards.Proficiency with AutoCAD, ETAP, PVsyst, or similar tools.Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.Highly organized, accountable, and able to manage multiple deadlines.Passion for renewable energy and sustainability.
