Principal Manager of Strategic LoadCity of San José – Energy Department (San José Clean Energy) About the RoleSan José Clean Energy (SJCE), operated by the City’s Energy Department, is seeking a Principal Manager of Strategic Load to lead engagement with large energy users and help shape innovative clean energy offerings for high-growth customers such as data centers, advanced manufacturers, and EV infrastructure. This role sits within the Account Management, Marketing & Customer Programs Division and reports to the Deputy Director.You will lead customer strategy, rate design input, and large-load acquisition efforts while ensuring compliance with regulatory and financial requirements. What You’ll Do Serve as primary relationship lead for large-load customers (data centers, industrials, EV charging, etc.)Build and manage a pipeline of high-value customer opportunitiesDevelop account strategies, pursuit plans, and structured customer offeringsSupport design of large-load products (e.g., flexible pricing, 24/7 clean energy solutions)Coordinate with Power Resources, Finance, Risk, and Legal teams on compliant offeringsLead pricing discussions, customer negotiations, and executive briefingsBenchmark utilities and CCAs to shape competitive market positioningEnsure regulatory compliance (CPUC/CCA rules, carbon reporting standards)Identify and manage commercial, regulatory, and reputational risksPartner across City departments on economic development and site expansion opportunitiesSupport external communications with Marketing and City leadership What We’re Looking ForCore Skills & Experience Deep experience in energy markets, utility operations, or power procurementStrong background in customer/account management or commercial energy rolesExperience with contract negotiation and structured energy offeringsUnderstanding of utility regulation, tariffs, or CCA frameworks Competencies Strategic thinking and market analysisStrong financial and commercial acumenExcellent communication and stakeholder managementAbility to lead cross-functional, technical teamsPolitical awareness and stakeholder engagement skills Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Economics, Law, Environmental Studies or related field6+ years of relevant experience in energy resources, procurement, planning, or contractingMaster’s degree may substitute for up to 2 years of experienceValid driver’s license may be required Compensation & Benefits Salary range: $182,982 – $228,726 annuallyDefined benefit retirement plan (CalPERS reciprocity)90% employer-paid medical coverage (lowest-cost plan)100% employer-paid dental coverage3–5 weeks vacation + executive leave15 paid holidays annually457(b) deferred compensation planLife, disability, and additional optional insurance coverageEmployee Assistance Program (EAP) Work Environment Hybrid role (onsite presence required in downtown San José)Designated Form 700 financial disclosure positionEqual opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion How to ApplyTo apply, submit: ResumeCover letter3 professional references Apply via Piper Maddox or email: s.kirby@pipermaddox.com +1 424 644 6163
