About the Role

San José Clean Energy (SJCE), operated by the City’s Energy Department, is seeking a Principal Manager of Strategic Load to lead engagement with large energy users and help shape innovative clean energy offerings for high-growth customers such as data centers, advanced manufacturers, and

EV infrastructure.

 

This role sits within the Account Management, Marketing & Customer

 

Programs Division and reports to the Deputy Director.

You will lead customer strategy, rate design input, and large-load acquisition efforts while ensuring compliance with regulatory and financial requirements.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Serve as primary relationship lead for large-load customers (data centers, industrials, EV charging, etc.)
  • Build and manage a pipeline of high-value customer opportunities
  • Develop account strategies, pursuit plans, and structured customer offerings
  • Support design of large-load products (e.g., flexible pricing, 24/7 clean energy solutions)
  • Coordinate with Power Resources, Finance, Risk, and Legal teams on compliant offerings
  • Lead pricing discussions, customer negotiations, and executive briefings
  • Benchmark utilities and CCAs to shape competitive market positioning
  • Ensure regulatory compliance (CPUC/CCA rules, carbon reporting standards)
  • Identify and manage commercial, regulatory, and reputational risks
  • Partner across City departments on economic development and site expansion opportunities
  • Support external communications with Marketing and City leadership

What We’re Looking For

Core Skills & Experience

  • Deep experience in energy markets, utility operations, or power procurement
  • Strong background in customer/account management or commercial energy roles
  • Experience with contract negotiation and structured energy offerings
  • Understanding of utility regulation, tariffs, or CCA frameworks

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Economics, Law, Environmental Studies or related field
  • 6+ years of relevant experience in energy resources, procurement, planning, or contracting
  • Master’s degree may substitute for up to 2 years of experience
  • Valid driver’s license may be required

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $182,982 – $228,726 annually
