Director of Business Development – Renewable Energy Growth & Strategy

Location: Charlottesville, VA

Piper Maddox is exclusively representing a fast-growing IPP that’s redefining how grid-scale renewables come to life. Backed by deep industry experience and strong financial footing, the company is scaling rapidly and looking for a Director of Business Development to lead the charge across project M&A, revenue origination, and strategic financial analysis.

This isn’t a “sit back and oversee” role — it’s a hands-on leadership opportunity for someone who can both close the deal and build the process that gets it done.

What You’ll Do

  • Drive Growth Through Deals: Source, structure, and negotiate project acquisitions, divestitures, and partnerships that accelerate expansion.
  • Shape Market Strategy: Build commercial frameworks for energy storage and renewable projects across multiple ISO/RTO markets.
  • Own the Revenue Story: Lead origination and negotiation of offtake agreements — tolling, hedges, PPAs — that balance merchant exposure and strategic upside.
  • Model the Future: Oversee financial modeling and valuation that guide executive and board-level decision-making.
  • Build Relationships That Matter: Maintain a strong network with developers, IPPs, utilities, banks, and investors to keep the opportunity pipeline active and informed.

What You Bring

  • 5+ years in renewable energy, project M&A, or structured origination — ideally with direct transaction execution experience.
  • Comfort leading complex negotiations across commercial and legal workstreams.
  • A strong command of power markets, revenue structures, and energy economics.
  • Fluency in Excel-based modeling and a solid understanding of project finance.
  • The ability to toggle between strategic vision and detail-driven analysis.

Who You Are

  • A strategic dealmaker who’s comfortable owning outcomes.
  • Curious, commercially minded, and driven by impact — not just process.
  • A clear communicator who can translate technical insight into executive action.
  • A collaborator who values agility and integrity as much as results.

Why This Company

This is a place where entrepreneurial thinkers thrive. You’ll be part of a close-knit, mission-driven team that’s big enough to execute major transactions — but small enough that your decisions will shape the company’s trajectory. The firm offers a flexible, people-first culture and comprehensive benefits, including health coverage, 401(k) with match, parental leave, and lifestyle stipends for wellness and development.

Interested?

If you’re ready to take ownership of deals that define the renewable landscape — and want to do it alongside some of the smartest, most grounded people in the industry — let’s talk.
