The Opportunity
We are supporting a rapidly growing energy storage business with the recruitment of an experienced Senior BESS Commissioning Engineer to lead and support the commissioning, testing and successful delivery of large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Europe.
This is a highly hands-on technical role for an experienced commissioning or electrical engineer with a strong background in BESS, renewable energy, power systems or electrical equipment.
You will take ownership of commissioning activities on site, leading technical troubleshooting, fault diagnosis, system testing and customer acceptance. You will work closely with Project Management, R&D, Quality and After-Sales teams to resolve complex technical issues and ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to schedule.
The role would suit an experienced BESS Commissioning Engineer, Senior Commissioning Engineer, Field Service Engineer or Electrical Engineer looking to take on greater responsibility within the rapidly expanding energy storage market.
Key Responsibilities
BESS Commissioning & Delivery
Take ownership of commissioning activities for large-scale BESS projects from initial energisation through testing, SAT and final handover.
Lead and execute commissioning activities across battery containers/cabinets and associated electrical, thermal, fire protection and control systems.
Develop and manage commissioning plans, testing procedures and site activities in line with project requirements and schedules.
Coordinate with site teams, subcontractors, customers and internal engineering teams to ensure commissioning milestones are achieved.
Identify technical risks early and implement solutions to minimise project delays.
Electrical & System Commissioning
Lead the commissioning, testing and troubleshooting of key BESS subsystems, including:
Battery systems and battery containers
Fire Suppression Systems (FSS)
Liquid Cooling / Thermal Management Systems (TMS/HVAC)
DC systems up to 1500V DC
Auxiliary AC systems (220V / 400V AC)
Battery Management Systems (BMS)
BMS communication and control systems
Protection and monitoring systems
PCS & EMS Commissioning
Lead or support the commissioning and functional testing of Power Conversion Systems (PCS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS).
Understand the operating principles and interfaces between BESS, PCS, EMS and grid systems.
Troubleshoot system-level issues across battery, PCS, EMS and grid interfaces.
Work with internal R&D and engineering teams to resolve complex commissioning and integration issues.
Fault Finding & Technical Troubleshooting
Take ownership of technical fault diagnosis and resolution during commissioning.
Analyse electrical, communication, control and system-level faults using appropriate testing and diagnostic methods.
Develop corrective actions and drive technical issues through to resolution.
Provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers and site personnel.
Identify recurring technical issues and provide structured feedback to R&D and product engineering teams.
Maintain clear records of commissioning issues, root causes, corrective actions and final resolution.
Testing, SAT & Grid Connection
Lead and participate in Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and system performance testing.
Support energisation and grid connection activities.
Coordinate testing between BESS, PCS, EMS, protection systems and grid infrastructure.
Support project acceptance, commissioning documentation and final customer handover.
Ensure all commissioning results and technical documentation meet project requirements.
Customer & Stakeholder Management
Act as a senior technical representative on site, working directly with customers, EPC contractors and project stakeholders.
Provide technical explanations and recommendations to customers throughout commissioning.
Support customer training covering system operation, maintenance and troubleshooting.
Manage technical discussions confidently with both internal engineering teams and external stakeholders.
Build strong working relationships with customers and project partners.
Project & Team Coordination
Coordinate commissioning activities with Project Management, Engineering, R&D, Quality and After-Sales teams.
Take ownership of commissioning schedules and ensure technical activities remain aligned with overall project milestones.
Coordinate subcontractors and other site resources where required.
Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior commissioning engineers.
Support the development and standardisation of commissioning procedures and best practices.
Health & Safety
Ensure all commissioning activities are carried out in accordance with EHS requirements, electrical safety procedures and site regulations.
Take responsibility for safe working practices during energisation, testing and fault-finding activities.
Identify and mitigate electrical and site-specific risks before commissioning work begins.
What We're Looking For
5+ years of professional experience in commissioning, field service, electrical engineering or a closely related technical discipline.
Strong hands-on experience commissioning BESS, renewable energy, power systems, electrical equipment or similar complex electrical systems.
Proven experience taking ownership of commissioning activities from energisation through to SAT, acceptance and handover.
Strong practical understanding of BMS, PCS and EMS, including their interfaces and operating principles.
Experience troubleshooting electrical, communication and control-system faults in live project environments.
Strong understanding of DC systems up to 1500V and AC auxiliary systems.
Ability to read and interpret:
Electrical schematics
Wiring diagrams
Single-line diagrams
Communication topology drawings
Experience with industrial communication protocols such as CAN and Modbus RTU/TCP.
Good understanding of primary and secondary electrical systems.
Experience with grid connection, substations, protection systems or power plant commissioning is highly advantageous.
Strong knowledge of electrical commissioning and testing methodologies.
Ability to independently diagnose problems, identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Experience working directly with customers, EPC contractors and subcontractors on technical issues.
Strong project coordination and stakeholder management skills.
Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Renewable Energy, Communication Engineering or a related discipline.
Fluent English for technical, customer and project communication.
Mandarin Chinese proficiency is required for communication with internal engineering and project teams.
Willingness to travel extensively and undertake long-term international assignments, particularly across Europe.
Ideal Candidate Background
We are particularly interested in experienced professionals from backgrounds such as:
